Beading means many things to different people. You can simply go to a store and buy beads, a beaded necklace or pendant or make them yourself. There are clay beads, wood beads, beads made of crystal, as well as a number of other ways to handmake beads. My favorite however has to be learning the fine art of beading with lampwork beads. How about adding a design to your clothes or purse? Maybe you just want a new look for a night out on the town. A lot of would be beading enthusiasts choose to start making their own jewelry. Why make your own beaded jewelry? Simply because it is relaxing, a worthwhile hobby you can share with friends, and in the end you have something to show for it. To become good at beading requires skill, determination, and a flair of creativity.

So as a beginner, what do you need to start beading?. Here is what I recommend:

Bead Wire or String

Pliers

Clasps

Crimps

Glue Gun

You can find beads at bead stores, craft stores, or online. I personally like Fire Mountain Gems and Etsy. Tools can be purchased at bead stores, craft stores, hardware stores, or big box stores. I recommend buying beading tools. Get the right tools for the right project. So, even if you are doing this for yourself as part of a business, you can purchase the same materials that bead artisans use.

Where do you learn about beading? There are newsletters and forums on the internet. Next, go check out Youtube. You'll find videos on everything from lampwork beads to making clay beads. Check out Yahoo Groups for subjects regarding beads. Make sure that you join in conversations on forums and ask questions. There are plenty of questions and answers from the beginner all the way to the most advanced beading enthusiasts. Check out articles and websites which share techniques, patterns, and designs. Finally, find a mentor.

If you've come this far and have decided to turn your beads and beading interests into a business, seek out fellow business owners. You'll be surprised to find that your local bead store won't mind talking shop if he/she knows that you will but selling beads online. Want a fun as a hobby, part time, or full time business?
